Why He’s Sticking Around

Posted on May 10th, 2007 in Articles, US Attorney Scandal, Morning Rundown by Jake Barnes

If the terms “I don’t recall” or “I can’t remember” make you a bit queasy then you might not want to listen to the news tonight. That’s because Alberto Gonzales is going to trek back up to the Capital today and testify before the House Judiciary Committee. If his testimony is anything like the one he gave before the Senate Judiciary Committee a while back then we will be left with far more questions than answers.

As I was driving into work today I was listening to NPR and there was a really interesting story about why, in all likelihood, Gonzales will not be asked to step down any time in the foreseeable future. To listen to the story click here. Basically Bush doesn’t want Gonzales to step down because if he does then the Democratically controlled Congress will have to confirm a new Attorney General and there is no way they’d confirm an AG who is anywhere near as Bushy as the current one. It would also not do anything to put to rest the uproar over the current US attorney scandal. If anything it would further inflame the situation because the Dems would have the ammunition they need (the resignation of Gonzales) to prove that something was, in fact, inappropriate about the handling of the firings.

Nothing like a good scandal to liven up your Thursday huh?

Good News!!!  Obama, Clinton, and Edwards have all announced that they will not participate in the September 23rd debate hosted by FOX NOISE!!!  The event, co-sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus has been extremely controversial, even on this site, we had a link to the petition asking the CBC to drop FOX.  The CBC has not yet cancelled the event, but if the Dem’s keep dropping out there simply won’t be anyone there to debate anything.

There’s a new page up on LCK: videos we like

Thus far the only one up is MC Rove, but if you haven’t seen Karl Rove “dance” you should definitely check that out.

Two new articles are up as well:

Imus Racist Ura Racist

And Gore: Saving the Planet, One University at at Time

Good Morning All!

The New York Times has a great article this morning about the troop surge’s effect on Iraq’s capital city of Baghdad. Long story short: it’s failing. The city is not really any safer than it was before and all three sides of the conflict (Sunni, Shi’a and Kurd) are all still arguing for their own regional autonomy. “The insurgency is in it’s last throws,” right Dick?

It was kind of a quiet weekend on liberalcollegekid but you can check out Run Over (almost) by Rove:

In other news, we added quite a few new authors this weekend, so hopefully we will have more posts rolling in soon. Also, if anyone out there wants an email address @liberalcollegekid.com we can totally hook you up!

Good Morning!

The big news today is the return of the 15 British troops that were being held in Iraq.  Speculation abounds over whether or not the British or American governments made a deal for their release.  All sides insist that no deal was struck, which is not that far fetched.  The lesson for Americans here: 15 people kidnapped by Iran, and the UK is not at war with them.  They used “diplomacy,” remember that word boys and girls?

There’s a great dialogue building on

Please Explain This

After you give your two cents there check out

Good Morning.

More of the same seems to be the current in the news today.  The Supreme Court’s ruling on reducing CO2 emissions made Bush upset as some states are now rushing to change their emissions policies.

Nancy Pelosi is in Syria, and that’s awesome.  She’s the first major US politician to go to Syria since 2003.  The Iraq Study Group said one of the most essential keys to ending the conflict in Iraq would be to engage Syria and work with them to end the conflict in neighboring Iraq.  Of course, the Republicans are trying to say this is just a photo opportunity.

Photo-op or not, it’s good to see diplomacy being tried once again instead of making archaic threats like “Bring it On!”

Good Morning All!

Yesterday’s supreme court ruling stating that the EPA has the authority to control CO2 emissions was a big victory in the fight against global warming.  This ruling came in direct contrast to the Bush Administration’s views on CO2 standards.

John McCain appears to be growing more senile by the day.  Remember when he said you or I could walk through the streets of Baghdad.  Of course we could, if like McCain we had 100 soldiers around us, wore bullet proof vests, and had three Black Hawk helicopters covering us from above.  And that market McCain walked through… has since been bombed.

Our only story from yesterday was Torture: the Christian Thing to Do?

“The Democrats have recently come out and said that they will work to “[close] Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; reinstate legal rights for terrorism suspects; and rein in what Democrats see as unwarranted encroachments on privacy and civil liberties allowed by the USA Patriot Act.” (courtesy of the Washington Post)”

Well the results are in for the first quarter of Presidential candidates fundraising. Here are the top three:

Clinton: $26 Million; Obama To Report Approx $21 Million; Edwards: $14 Million

I am attending a live presentation by Al Gore of his film An Inconvenient Truth today. You can expect a post about it very very soon.

Things to look for this week:

Senators Reid and Feingold have put together another Iraq spending bill. This one would force troop redeployments after every 120 days and once again have US involvement down in Iraq by March 2008. We’ll see if Bush likes this one any more than the bill the senate passed last week.

Finally, be sure to check out

FOX NOISE and sign the petition to get the CBC to drop FOX as a debate sponsor.

Have a great day!

Good Morning!

Mr. Sampson’s testimony yesterday was long and slightly less exciting than we had hoped it would be… That said, he did make it very clear that the decision makers in the firings themselves were Alberto Gonzalez
and the White House Counsel. April 17th is when Alberto Gonzalez is all set to testify before the committee; the question is, will he still have a job?

Latest from Liberal College Kid:

Iran Wanted Peace
-

” Le Monde, today, ran an article with an interview they did with Flynt Leverett, a former senior Middle East policy advisor for the National Security Council (for a Wikipedia bio on him click here). While my French isn’t prefect it’s not horrible either and with a little Babelfish help on some of the more obscure language I was able to get through it and gleam some interesting information about the current Iranian nuclear crisis. Leverett believes that the best chance for a resolution to the crisis came in 2003 when Switzerland floated a letter (or letters) from Tehran which amounted to nothing less than a broad based peace offer and was (according to another site) “presented as having support from all major players in Iran’s power structure, including the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei”. However the Bush administration, in all its wisdom, refused to open a dialogue with Iran which could have had a real shot at working. ”

Who Needs Checks and Balances
-
“Kyle Sampson, the former chief of staff for Alberto Gonzales, said today at a Senate hearing on the firing of US attorneys that “’The distinction between ‘political’ and ‘performance-related’ reasons for removing a United States attorney is, in [his] view, largely artificial” and continued on to say that “a U.S. attorney who is unsuccessful from a political perspective is… unsuccessful”. Are you serious? You know who else thought like that? Stalin. Look how well that worked out for the Russian people. I want to punch a brick wall right now so I have something to be mad at other than the absolute ass-backwardness of our government right now.”

Good Morning All!

We’re trying something new… Rather than sending out an email for each new post, we thought we would limit the amount of mail by sending one per day with summaries and links to articles. If you would prefer the old system, you may register on liberalcollegekid.com and go to the subscription page to select which categories you get emails about!

Now to business.

The biggest news story today will no doubt be D. Kyle Sampson’s testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Sampson, the former Chief of Staff to Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez is set to discuss the handling of the US Attorney firings, Karl Rove’s involvement as well as what AG knew about the firings and when he knew it. We can’t wait!

In a move which was no doubt aimed to force the U.K./U.S. alliance’s hand Tehran has refused to release the 15 British sailors they captured six days ago. The British government today backed up the threat it made yesterday to make public the GPS data it has pertaining to the position of British ships which were, according to Iranian officials operating in Iranian not Iraqi territorial waters. According to Ministry of Defense officials the sailors were 1.7 nautical miles inside of Iraqi territory when they were surrounded by six Iranian vessels and taken prisoner.” - by Jake Barnes

Morning Run Down 3/28

Posted on March 28th, 2007 in Morning Rundown by liberalcollegekid

Good Morning All!

Tony Snow’s news of his cancer returning is a very sad note, and yet another thing gone wrong recently for the Bush White House.  With the Senate and House both approving a War Time Spending Bill with a pull out date for Iraq (YES!!!!) Bush’s stance on the war has never been so greatly called into question.  Add to this the on going Attorney General Case and you can see why it’s just one head ache after another for this administration.

Speaking of Alberto, yesterday he walked away from a 15 minute press conference after just 3 minutes.  Maybe he had to go clean out his desk?  Oh wait, that’s next week.

Fun note, apparently San Francisco plans to ban plastic bags from grocery stores.  ‘Would you like plastic or to save the environment?’

Have a great day!
